Kid Cudi is back with a new project, "Indicud", his third studio album that released today, April 16th. "Indicud" is for all of Kid Cudi's regular and older fans only because it the same eccentric sound. Most people know Kid Cudi as the man who assisted Kanye West with the writing and vocal work of Ye's 2008 auto tuned detour, "808's & Heatbreak". Kid Cudi is known for his futuristic and out of space sound, hince his nickname "Moon Man", which is what we will expect on this album.
Indicud started off with "The Resurrection of Scott Mescudi" and "Unfuckwittable", which both had eccentric sound waves and amazing electric and bass guitar work that sounds like something off of the 1980 movie, "The Shining" which was known for it's abnormal music and screenplay. "Unfuckeittable" intro is a sample of Macaulay Culkin's 1993's "The Good Son". Cudi sounds empowered and energized than ever in this record, you can tell by the lyrics in the song too!
Some tracks that stand out to me was "King Wizard". In the intro Cudi decicates this song to his boys, his family and fans, but most importantly to his haters. What makes this track stand out to me was the catchy beat, it's not like his other productions because it has a little hood flavor in it (He is from Cleveland, Ohio!). Another is "Burn Baby Burn" which was a rant track.Cudi raps "N***as think I'm living my life paranoid, f*** that man". Kid gets stuff off his chest and let's it out on one long verse. He addressed the accusations about heavy drug use by saying "I just experimented, and it helped me adjust". Then there was "Immortal", one of his singles that he released earlier this year. In "Immortal", Cudi sings, "I can't explain this sudden peace in my walk" over a sample of MGMT's "Congratulations", which actually runs backward (He revealed this secret on Twitter last month, pretty cool huh?). "Immortal" to me is a part two of "Day N' Night", which was a battle between his good and evil side. But in "Immortal", Cudi is a new man.
I absolutely love "Girls" ft Too $hort! I am always screaming "I see pretty girls everywhere I go, every, every, everywhere I go!". "Girls" celebrates the diversity of females and how beautiful they are. This track is definitey a Spring/Summer anthem; the females would love this record! I hope it gets spins on the radio. Another track that I love but I was surprised by was "Brothers" ft King Chip and A$AP Rocky. In this song Cudi, King Chip, and Rocky rap about the bound they all have for their friends that they call their brothers. The track had a very smooth late 90's flow to it which made Rocky, who had a victorious verse, spit a double speeded flow that would make Bone Thugs-N Harmony proud.
Some tracks that are unique are "New York City Rage Fest" and "Afterwards (Bring Yo Friends)" ft Michael Bolton and King Chip. "New York City Rage Fest" is sounds like Hip Hop techno music, if that is even possible. It also has an early 2000's flavor that mixed with punk and electronic dance music. The "House Music" clubs will love it! Cudi then gives us "Afterwards (Bring Yo Friends)", a nine minute track that has a 70's vibe to it; thanks to Michael Bolton's vocals. This track definitely has that 70's rollerskating jam vibe, like the end of Frank Ocean's "Pyramids".
Kid Cudi recently said in a radio interview that he was no longer with Kanye West's label G.O.O.D Music. Some were shocked and others saw it coming. But if you noticed last year when the G.O.O.D Music "Cruel Summer" album dropped, Cudi barely promoted the album and he was even featured in album. I am kind of glad Kid Cudi is not apart of G.O.O.D Music because his sound is very different from them. He gives us more if a Odd Future sound then a typical Hip Hop sound anyways so it was best for him to part ways. Overall this album is amazing, from the eccentric production to all the different features like Kendrick Lamar, RZA, etc. that are included in this masterpiece. If they had to remake the movie "The Shining", this album should be featured in all aspects of the movie. "The Shining" was not just a movie it was a picture with visuals, and "Indicud" is not just a Hip Hop album it's artwork. Kid Cudi's fans got to travel through a whole new world with this one. Thanks "Moon Man"!
