When people think of Tyler The Creator, they think of this weird, non talented rapper that said "Jesus is a bitch".Tyler The Creator first came out the Hip Hop scene with songs and videos that came off controversial and judgemental. Most people were confused of how Tyler The Creator could call himself a rapper with the lyrics he put out. I personally didn't like Tyler The Creator because he was very different and at the time I liked mainstream rappers. Tyler wasn't the type of rapper I would listen to at the time as well. But now I have given Tyler The Creator a second look after hearing that he worked a long side with Frank Ocean, a member of OFWGKTA, on his album Channel Orange. Channel Orange is my favorite album that came out last year, so if Tyler had something to do with it I have to stop listening to what everybody else said about Tyler and really listen to his music.
Tyler The Creator is back with an album entitled WOLF that came out today, April 2nd. Over all, this was a very artistic album, it had everything a Hip Hop album should have, a little bit of everything. The production, the lyrics, the vision of this album was outstanding and Tyler should be proud of this album instead of saying it sucks! WOLF to me was a "Slim Shady" album. The creativity and the stories Tyler told in every song reminded me of Slim. Lets be clear here, Slim Shady and Eminem are two different artist with two different personalities. I think that if we had to compare Tyler to any artist (which I hate to compare two artist) it would have to be Slim Shady. People would say Slim Shady has controversial lyrics and so does Tyler!
Tyler's first single "Domo 23" sent out a buzz for this album and when the video surfaced, Tyler had everybody screaming "DOMO!". The song had a lot of smack talking and the video had a lot of smacking it in. Tyler's second single was "IFHY" which features Pharrell. The lyrics showed a bit of "young love", Tyler expressed in the song "I f***ing hate you but I love". The video really grabbed my attention because it was so different and artistic. Even Kanye West felt some type of way about the video; he took down everything on website, KanyeWest.com and put up "IFHY" (Mr.West accepts).
"48" ft. Nas and Frank Ocean, is the best song in the album. Nas as a cameo in this song expressing his views about crack in America. We as the audience really see a different side of Tyler, a Tyler that talks and cares about social issues. But then we hear a song like "Pigs" which expresses a loner who gathers up a crowd to shoot up a school, we back track and say "Controversial, isn't it?" We all know the lyrics in "Pigs" can come off as disturbing and uncomfortable but then again it's Tyler The Creator!
Some songs on the album that might catch people's attention are "Colossus", "PartyIsntOver/Campfire/Bimmer", and "Treehome95". "Colossus" is a mixture of Eminem's "The Way I am" and "Stan" but on emotional snteroids. Tyler talks about himself from a fans point of view. "PartyIsntOver/Campfire/Bimmer" ft Laetitia and Frank Ocean is a very intriguing and unique song. "PartyIsntOver/Campfire/Bimmer" are three songs combined into one! Tyler really tells a story in all three songs. The way Tyler orchestrated this track is genius. How he goes from one melody to another witout confusing the audience is mind blowing. Has anybody done this before? Three songs in one? "Treehome95" ft. Coco O. and Erykah Badu is an amazing record, full of grace and soul. I was suprised "Treehome95" was even on WOLF because it's a beautiful jazzy, soulful record; it's not Hip Hop track but this proves that Tyler is an artist not just a rapper.
Over all this album is great! Even if you are not a fan of Tyler The Creator you will truly enjoy the fourteen storytelling tracks Tyler has created for us.
Congratulations on this album, WOLF!
